"What is kpop?" Part 2

When I wrote my magnum opus "What is kpop?" I didn't expect to follow up on it.

But while listening to Dal Shabet's "BBB" the other day, I thought about which kpop videos I would show to my friends who are unfamiliar to kpop (and by "friends," I mean the hypothetical ones I might someday have, because let's face it, Soyeon Friend and I have no friends outside family, the Internet, and the cactus in our kitchen.)

Fun to look at, not so much fun to talk kpop with

Then it dawned on me that I was already listening to a representative kpop song. "BBB" is a great intro to kpop for the unindoctrinated.

The face of kpop — it's excruciating, I know.

Cheerz: Spica "I'll Be There"

I've wanted to Cheerz this song for weeks now, but things kept getting in the way.

I've been a bad Fany. You should punish me, Jiwon.

Getting sappy about "Miss Korea"

Last weekend, Soyeon Friend and I wrapped up watching "Miss Korea," which we both really liked. SF even included his thoughts on it in a new feature on his blog (which he's recently resurrected). If you're a fan of the show or just want insight into the mind of Soyeon's biggest fan, check it out here.

The Best of the Worst: April 24

It was a slow week in kpop news, with everyone focusing rightfully on the Sewol disaster.

But alas, stupid doesn't take a break. And that's why we have this post, which includes such tidbits as an actor being accused of showing off with a large donation, a woman in her 30s wanting to become an idol, and a brother taking revenge on his Exo stan sister.

This is why we do what we do.

Cheerz: Jay Park "Tonight"

Earlier this month, Jay Park came back with "Metronome," his first release since welcoming co-CEO Simon D to his AOMG label.

The song was OK, I guess, but not my cup of tea. It was neither a fun dance track nor an authentic, emotional R&B song. It was just there and didn't even offer any hot closeups of Jay.

To remedy this forgettable release, let's Cheerz one of my favorite Jay Park songs, "Tonight."

The Best of the Worst: April 17

This week, we got to enjoy one of our favorite things: kpop doppelgangers posts. Even if you're bored of the overused Taeyeon/Jisook or Daesung/K.Will comparisons, fear not. This time, we were treated to opposite-gendered counterparts.

Mir and Chorong

Sohee and Xiumin

Hongbin and Hyeri

OK, OK, maybe not this one

Review: Block B "Jackpot"

On Monday as I sat down with my breakfast to watch Block B's "Jackpot" video for the first time, I had one thought: "It's too damn early for this."

The cereal that gives you indigestion

Cheerz: D-Unit "Luv Me"

There are monumental events in everyone's life that make time stand still.

2:04 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, the minute my life changed

It was the moment I realized I liked a D-Unit song.

Never forget

The Best of the Worst: April 10

We have a grab bag this week, including questionable love advice, another group who likes to get naked, and these handsome devils:

Maybe it's time for a hat, Hangeng.

"What is kpop?"

If anyone ever asks you that question, just pull out this photo:

Also works for "Why do you like kpop?"

And "What are some good kpop groups to listen to?"

On location with SPEED

After an excruciating two-week hiatus, SPEED came back earlier this month with "Look At Me Now." It's the first SPEED song I've liked. In fact, I enjoy it so much I've crossed over into obsessed territory, but I digress.

The video for "Look At Me Now" is bare bones. There is no plot, no cute closeups, no star cameos. From what I can tell, CCM's investment in this video involved dropping the group in a desert and calling it a day.

Will dance for ride back to Seoul

The Best of the Worst: April 3

Finally, it's Thursday again. I've been bursting with things to share all week. Like this:

SNSD dancing queen Hyoyeon caused a storm in the kpop world after it was found out she was taken to the police station and accused of hitting a male friend.

Hyoyeon smash!
